HôY LA PURPLE

Some say that purple is the colour of magic. Whether that’s fact or fiction, there’s certainly something spell-binding about Hôy La’s newest track ‘Purple’. We featured this little-known Scandinavian musician before, almost a year ago with contemporary trip-hop single ‘Please’, and this being only her fourth public release, it’s clear that quality over quantity is Ingri Høyland Kvamstad’s goal. There’s a good dose of lingering trip-hop throughout ‘Purple’ - its stark and dramatic composition exudes secrets unknown, and Kvamstad’s hauntingly beautiful voice gives nothing away. Alongside the track, there’s an equally mesmerising video, filmed in Japan, and co-directed by the artist and Jonas Lien Svarstad. Soaked in hues of purple, each frame is exquisite and the visuals perfectly suit Hôy La’s modern, Nordic twist on a cultural movement of the nineties. - Hannah Thacker
